Inclusive Sports & Recreation Activities – Training and Demonstration
Sports is an excellent tool to promote inclusion. Inclusive sports also increases the self-confidence of persons with disabilities and transforms the public’s perception of persons with disabilities. Inclusive sports is where the abilities of people with disabilities are evident and is a space where the peers without disabilities try to understand the potential.
With this in mind, a two-day training and demonstration on “Inclusive Sports and Recreation Activities” was jointly organized by CBM India and Bethany Society on the 12th& 13th of November 2018 at Jyoti Sroat School, Litamukrah, Shillong.
The event was facilitated by Dr.Nagarajan, Senior Manager, Asia Pacific Special Olympics, and Mr.Vijayakant, first National Director for Special Olympics – India, Coordinated by the Principal, staff, and students of Jyoti Sroat School, Shillong.
The first day was dedicated to an orientation programme followed by a training on inclusive sports with instructions, rules, and regulations for inclusive sports demonstrated practically. Approximately 60 participants were present at the event. This included staff of RAISE-NE, Bethany Society, physical education teachers, staff and students of Jyoti Sroat School.
The second day was dedicated to demonstration and competition. The Inclusive Sports and Recreation Activities 2018 was declared open by Bro. Steve Ocha, Director, Nine is Mine Campaign. The events organized were football, bocce, badminton and relay race. The unique process of the entire event was planned and organized by the children and teachers facilitated by the CBM team.
The event has resulted in increased self-confidence among children with disabilities when playing with their peers without disabilities, closer bondage among children. The winners of the events were awarded gold medals for the 1st place silver for the 2nd place and bronze for the 3rd place. The overall event was empowering, engaging and exciting and resulted in further strengthening of the bond among children and staff alike.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. G.G. Pariat, President of Jyoti Sroat School Managing Committee.
