Major School Programmes

The core functional value of all our programs is Inclusion for All. Driven by the propelling spirit of Inclusion, we have fostered a conducive environment for all students right from Playgroup to Higher Secondary, to learn in an Inclusive Classroom.
Functioning under the wings of Bethany Society, together we envisaged and developed a constructive school program to ensure the overall holistic development of every child in an Inclusive environment.  To achieve the same, we have the following major programs:
  1. Education: An inclusive school from Early education till Higher Secondary Class XII) recognized by the Department of Education, Govt. of Meghalaya and following Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education (MBOSE) curriculum. Currently, out of 250 children, 115 are children with disability. Since 1993, 280 children with disability have successfully passed-out from the institute. Since 2006 till 2018, a total of 133 students (87 students in Class X and 46 students in Class XII) with disabilities have emerged successful in passing the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) Examinations.
  2. Early Intervention: With the partial support of Christoffelblinden Mission (CBM), Jyoti Sroat School started Early Intervention services which include a variety of coordinated therapeutic and support services to children (0-12 years) and their families in the year 2016. Out of the 37 children availing of the services, 9 are currently enrolled in school.
  3. National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS): Jyoti Sroat School is an accredited centre of National Institute of Open Schooling (Department of School Education & literacy, M.H.R.D, Govt. of India) and offers Secondary & Senior Secondary Level (Without Science) courses. Since 2017, a total of 32 students ( 17 students in 2017 and 15 students in 2018) have registered under NIOS. Out of the first batch of 17 students who appeared for examinations in 2017, 8 students successfully passed in the secondary level.
  4. Out of School support class: We offer out of school support class to increase the enrollment of all children between 6 to 14 years and thereby decrease the drop-out rate in schools. We follow a simplified syllabus approved by Directorate of Education Research and Training (D.E.R.T.) to ensure that through appropriate intervention children are placed in their age-appropriate classes.
  5. Advocacy: Jyoti Sroat School through Regional Action on Inclusive Education in North East (RAISE North-East) project is actively involved in advocacy and capacity initiatives aimed at attitude change viz. Awareness campaigns on educational rights and entitlements of children with disabilities at the state level, building of alliances with other NGOs, building up of champions for the cause (self-advocates, parliamentarians, etc.)
  6. Neighbourhood Children’s Parliament: Providing empowerment of children and child autonomy by providing them with a platform to be heard and also participate in self-governance. Since 2016, a 36 member inclusive children’s parliament has been established and is functioning in Jyoti Sroat School. Besides, 3 other children’s parliaments with 36 members each have been set-up in 3 districts of Meghalaya.
